Fake TikTok Doctor Matthew Lani Arrested at Johannesburg Hospital

Matthew Lani was arrested at a Johannesburg hospital on Sunday night by health authorities, putting an end to his alleged impersonation of a medical doctor to gain popularity on TikTok.

According to news24, Helen Joseph Hospital’s security personnel intercepted Lani as he entered the premises through the main entrance. He wore a hoodie, a surgical mask, and even a stethoscope around his neck.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba explained the events, stating that after his initial detention, Lani requested to use the bathroom but seized the opportunity to try and escape through the bathroom window.

However, when security personnel noticed his escape attempt, they called for reinforcements, prompting his apprehension. The police were promptly contacted, and Lani was handed over to them for an official arrest.

News24 previously reported that Lani faced charges of identity fraud and impersonation of a medical doctor.

His notoriety came from portraying himself as a Gauteng health department employee at a Johannesburg hospital. He asserted that he held a medicine degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and was registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Lani also claimed to possess a high school diploma from Cambridge International College. However, both institutions have disassociated themselves from him.

Lani, however, has maintained his innocence throughout this ordeal.
