Ekurhuleni’s Stormwater Infrastructure Ready for Heavy Rains
In preparation for the upcoming heavy rains in Ekurhuleni, the MMC for Transport Planning, Roads, and Stormwater, Andile Mngwevu, initiated The city’s stormwater system cleaning program, which he launched in Langaville on October 19.
The primary cause of blockages in the city’s stormwater system remains illegal dumping, as revealed by Mngwevu during the program’s launch.
Mngwevu stressed the importance of communities refraining from depositing foreign objects into the stormwater system, as such actions result in unnecessary blockages and, ultimately, flooding.
Objects such as vehicle tires, animal bones, skins, plastic bags, and logs were retrieved from these blocked drains.

The consequences of these blockages extend to road damage, particularly affecting road surfaces, resulting in potholes and constant road deterioration. Furthermore, the blocked drains contribute to unpleasant odours, affecting the environment.
Mngwevu stressed the role of residents in preventing stormwater drainage system blockages, calling for collective action to maintain the city’s infrastructure.
The city is committed to intensifying its cleaning efforts in the lead-up to the rainy season, thus bolstering its stormwater infrastructure to withstand the expected downpours.
