New Rehabilitation Center Opens in Benoni
The Youth Revival Sanctuary, a new rehabilitation centre in Benoni, aims to address the increasing issue of substance abuse among young teenagers with the support of community-driven organisations. On October 21, various local entities, including the Avenues Residents Association (ARA), ER24, the South African National Blood Services (SANBS), Super Cops, Life The Glynnwood Hospital, Fresh FM, and other businesses, rallied on Pretoria Road, Rynfield, to show their support for the newly opened centre.

Suzette Dippenaar, with 25 years of experience working at SANCA Horizon Clinic, founded the in-patient facility focused on assisting youths aged 13 to 17 in overcoming addiction. She noted the alarming rise in teen substance abuse, with substances like cannabis, alcohol, nyaope, prescription medication, and codeine-containing cough syrup being commonly abused. Various factors, such as peer pressure, unrealistic social standards on social media, family dynamics, and underlying mental health issues, often drive teens into the world of substance abuse.
Dippenaar’s treatment program, called The Strong, spans three weeks and equips clients with the knowledge and tools to combat addiction. The program involves a multidisciplinary team of medical, therapy, and nursing professionals tailored to each healthcare user’s specific needs.
Marinda Beukes, chairperson of ARA, emphasised the devastating effects of substance abuse on both users and the community. She highlighted the easy availability of drugs and the attractive marketing and packaging strategies targeting teens. ARA expressed its full support for the Youth Revival Sanctuary and hopes that through awareness campaigns, parents and adolescents will realise help is available. The community’s united effort aims to make recovery from substance abuse a little less challenging.
