Ekurhuleni’s Financial Health Is Strong Affirms MMC
During a council meeting on October 17, Ekurhuleni’s financial situation was discussed, with the ANC, DA, and ActionSA claiming the city was in dire financial straits. Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga countered these claims, stating that the city was not broke and faced only fiscal constraints.

He disputed the DA’s statement about the city’s cash flow and outstanding payments, asserting that the city’s finances remained intact. He clarified the city’s dispute with Eskom, noting it involved penalties and interest for late payments.
Dunga admitted to overdue accounts to suppliers, explaining that the financial year’s end increased what was owed, but measures were in place to address the outstanding debt.
He also discussed programs to recover lost revenue, including disconnecting services at hijacked buildings and addressing water leaks to curb water and electricity losses.
Despite the opposition parties’ concerns, Dunga maintained that the city was not on the brink of financial collapse and could continue its government programs.
However, ActionSA disagreed, claiming the ANC-EFF coalition’s political infighting was pushing the city toward a meltdown and calling for immediate interventions to improve the city’s financial situation.
The DA expressed concerns about transparency and urged the city to address its financial position more proactively.
The disagreement over Ekurhuleni’s financial status highlights ongoing tensions and challenges within the municipality.
