Illegal Dumping Persists in Pretoria Amid Waste Collection Disruptions: Normal Services to Resume Soon

Illegal dumping in Pretoria continues due to the ongoing unprotected strike, which has disrupted waste collection services in the city’s northern areas. However, the city has initiated a plan to address this disruption.

Ward 2 councillor Yolanda Duvenage revealed that garbage trucks had not been operational due to threats of intimidation from the strike, but they have now returned to service. Plans are in place to clear the backlog, including during the weekend, within the next few days.

The absence of waste collection services has compelled some residents to seek alternative ways of disposing of their waste, including burning it and resorting to illegal dumping at the Daan de Wet Nel dumpsite. This illegal dumping has exacerbated frustrations among residents who must contend with the unsightly mess and associated odours as they pass by the area.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba acknowledged the persistent illegal dumping in the region and explained that a catch-up plan has been initiated to address the overflowing waste at garden refuse sites. Bokaba emphasised not undermining these efforts by continuing to dump illegally.

Unfortunately, due to ongoing strike-related incidents disrupting the city’s efforts to restore normal operations, providing a specific timeline for resuming regular waste collection services is challenging.

Expressing frustration, a resident took to social media to condemn those responsible for illegal dumping in the area. Bokaba highlighted that Tshwane’s waste management by-law allows for penalties against individuals guilty of contravening its provisions. Such individuals may be required to remove and dispose of the abandoned waste as directed by the municipality or face expenses associated with the municipality’s efforts to address the issue.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management Ziyanda Zwane encouraged residents to cease illegal dumping and actively contribute to maintaining a clean Tshwane. She assured residents that the city is working diligently to overcome challenges posed by the illegal strike and associated waste removal delays.
