LGBTI Tournament Sparks Excitement at Rabie Ridge Stadium
The ongoing Phuti Lekoloane LGBTI Legacy Games, currently taking place at Rabie Ridge Stadium, has intensified the feud between the Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) and the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation department. The tournament, running from September 30 to October 28, has sparked controversy, with MLFA claiming it falls outside their jurisdiction.

According to City spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane, the Sports and Recreation department has faced challenges due to openly expressed homophobic views during the event. Despite numerous engagements with MLFA, including the presence of Joburg Safa, Modingoane accused MLFA of harbouring concealed motives. He alleged that Sthembiso Buthelezi, MLFA’s chairperson, has displayed a determination to obstruct the tournament and has a personal vendetta against both the City of Johannesburg and the LGBTI community.
Modingoane emphasiseds the city’s commitment to inclusivity and challenges the idea that individuals need permission from local football associations to use public facilities. He asserted that personal biases should not disrupt the smooth conduct of events.
In response, Buthelezi rejected accusations of being openly against the LGBTI community and stated his intention to pursue a defamation of character case. He affirmed that everyone should exercise their freedom of movement without infringements on their rights. Buthelezi claimed that MLFA was not consulted as a football stakeholder in the area and criticised the city for allegedly supporting actions destabilising organised football in the region.
