DPWI Cautions Against Festive Job Scams
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has warned the public sternly regarding the rise of fraudulent job advertisements, especially as the festive season approaches. Scammers have devised cunning methods to deceive unsuspecting South Africans into believing they’re applying for positions within the department. One prevalent tactic involves creating fake job listings, purportedly from the DPWI, prompting job seekers to submit applications via a website resembling the official site as reported by SA News.

Once applications are in the scammers’ hands, they demand a deposit under the guise of a verification fee, instructing applicants to use cell-phone-generated money transfers like E-Wallets or make payments at popular supermarkets such as Spar, Shoprite, Pick ‘n Pay, and others. After the money is received, the fraudsters vanish, leaving the hopeful job seekers financially drained and vulnerable, as their personal information may be exploited for further fraudulent activities.
The DPWI emphatically emphasises that it never requires payment for advertised job opportunities. Legitimate job vacancies are only posted through the DPSA circular and on the official DPWI website, which can be accessed at www.publicworks.gov.za. Verifying the authenticity of any advertised job openings is crucial by visiting the official websites mentioned. Furthermore, job seekers are urged to physically visit DPWI offices to corroborate the legitimacy of any job postings.
One specific scam circulating involves 85 advertised positions for Data Capturing Clerks, which the DPWI has not announced. Consequently, the department strongly advises the public not to click on the associated link or share any sensitive information. Stay vigilant and cautious to avoid falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.
