South Africa Vows to Halt Illegal Mining and Illegal Immigration

SA is determined to stop illegal mining and the harbouring of illegal migrants reaffirms Cabinet. These activities sabotage the nation’s security and harm the economy.

According to SANews, the Cabinet acknowledges and appreciates the concerted efforts of individuals and organisations collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat these criminal activities. Such cooperation strengthens the country’s justice and crime prevention systems and contributes to a safer South Africa.

This commitment to the fight against crime has recently seen significant successes. In a major operation at an illegal coal mine in Carolina, Mpumalanga, mining equipment valued at R60 million and coal worth R12 million were confiscated. Furthermore, a mine manager, unable to provide a valid mining permit, was arrested.

In another multi-disciplinary operation targeting illegal mining and immigration in the Northern Cape, officers apprehended 867 individuals. Among those detained, many hailed from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa.

Coordinated efforts between the South African Police Service and Eskom security resulted in the arrest of a coal driver and two weighbridge clerks. They face charges of alleged fraud and theft of coal from Eskom.

South Africa remains committed to eradicating illegal activities threatening its security and economic stability and stands united with those dedicated to this mission.
