Residents of Johannesburg are grappling with impending water interruptions after the thunderstorm that hit Gauteng on Tuesday night. Per SABC News, the storm caused a significant power failure at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant, operated by Rand Water, which serves as a critical water source for the City of Johannesburg and several neighbouring municipalities.

This unfortunate incident has put nearly 10 Joburg Water reservoirs and towers at risk of experiencing water supply disruptions. Nombuso Shabalala, the spokesperson for Joburg Water, disclosed that they will be deploying water tankers to the affected areas to mitigate the inconvenience caused.

The power failure has had a substantial impact, resulting in the loss of a staggering 2,000 million litres of water daily. To compound the situation, Johannesburg Water’s and Rand Water’s systems were already under strain due to high water consumption, making the recovery process all the more challenging. Fortunately, technical teams from both entities are collaborating tirelessly to restore normalcy to the water supply systems as swiftly as possible.
