Emerging Scientists Display Projects at International Science Fair

This year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) promises to be a global talent showcase featuring 330 local young scientists and 20 participants from 10 countries alongside South African regions. From October 3-6, these young minds will gather at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg to present their innovative projects and compete for prestigious prizes as reported by Mapepeza.

After emerging victorious in regional finals, these budding scientists are now eager to impress a panel of judges and industry experts. Generous sponsors, including Eskom, Siemens Energy, and others, have contributed to the prizes, which range from full and partial bursaries to cash prizes, laptops, and more.

Eskom and Siemens Energy are offering substantial bursaries, valued at over R400,000 each, to support students pursuing engineering at a South African university. Eskom Development Foundation Acting CEO Mologadi Motshele emphasised the organization’s commitment to supporting science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) and fostering diversity and inclusion.

Eskom Expo Executive Director Parthy Chetty, highlighted that this fair has nurtured young scientists and engineers for the past 43 years. The top and junior scientists will receive cash prizes of R75,000 and R50,000, respectively. Additionally, over 20 winning learners will earn all-expenses-paid international trips to compete in other competitions worldwide.

The Eskom Expo ISF is not just about scientific innovation; it’s also an opportunity for participants to explore Johannesburg’s cultural and scientific heritage through guided tours of various attractions.

This year’s Eskom Expo ISF saw a remarkable increase in participation, with 7,959 projects presented, compared to 4,432 in 2022. Notably, both boys and girls actively engaged in regional expos.

Public members are invited to attend the Eskom Expo ISF and witness the impressive projects developed by these young scientists. The exhibition hall will be open to the public on Thursday, October 5, from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.
