City of Tshwane – No Funds for Salary Increases Amid Strike

no money for salary increases for unionised workers

The City of Tshwane has taken a firm stance, asserting there is no money for salary increases for unionised workers. Per EWN, municipal employees in Tshwane affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) have been part of a disruptive strike for the past two months. This strike started in response to the city’s decision to forgo wage increases for the current financial year.

The strike escalated, with reports of the torching of municipal trucks, turning the situation into a serious concern. The Gauteng Legislature has called on the union and city to participate in mediation. However, Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink believes mediation will unlikely yield positive outcomes.

Brink stated that the strike has evolved beyond a simple labour dispute and is now considered criminal. He emphasised that specific issues, like the absence of approximately R600 million required for salary increases, cannot be resolved through mediation. Brink also pointed out that matters related to law enforcement, especially where property is threatened, are unsuitable for mediation.

The ongoing strike continues to impact the city’s operations, and residents should exercise patience while the situation is being addressed.
