Gauteng to Host Cosafa Women’s Championship
The upcoming 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship is set to take place in Gauteng, running from October 4 to 15. This edition of the tournament promises excitement as defending champions Zambia prepare to safeguard their regional title, which they clinched in last year’s competition. Notably, Zimbabwe is making a highly anticipated return to international women’s football after the lifting of their suspension as reported by Namibian.

The draw for the tournament is scheduled to occur in Boksburg, Gauteng, on September 14 at 11:00. Fans can catch the draw live on Cosafa’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
The participating teams include the host nation, South Africa, who boasts a record seven-time victory in the regional championship. Zambia leads a formidable field of competitors, which also includes Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Angola, Lesotho, Eswatini, Comoros, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe. This diverse lineup will be divided into three groups, each comprising four teams. The top team in each group will progress to the semifinals, with the best runner-up from the groups also advancing to the knockout stages.
The tournament is expected to showcase top-tier women’s football in the region and will serve as excellent preparation for the second round of qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Several Cosafa teams remain involved in these qualifiers, with Zambia facing Mali, Namibia taking on Morocco, Botswana competing against Tanzania, and South Africa meeting DR Congo in the upcoming matches scheduled for late October.
In the history of the Cosafa Women’s Championships, South Africa has secured victory in seven of the previous ten editions. Zimbabwe (2011), Tanzania (2021), and Zambia (2022) are the other teams that have clinched the coveted trophy, adding to the anticipation surrounding this year’s competition.
