Roodepoort Mountaineer Achieves 10th Summit of Kilimanjaro

Reflecting on his journey, John recalled his initial encounter with Kilimanjaro in October 2000. At that time, he was part of an expedition to conquer the three tallest mountains in Africa, including Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, and the Ruwenzori in Uganda.

Throughout the years, John has been exceptionally fortunate to share this awe-inspiring mountain with a range of companions, including his wife, father, and friends. He also expressed gratitude for his many new friendships on the mountain.

Despite his considerable experience climbing Kilimanjaro, John emphasised that each of his 10 trips has been distinct and presented unique challenges. These variations encompassed factors like weather conditions, the composition of the team, and the diverse experiences encountered during the ascent.

Reflecting on his journey, John singled out his initial trip as possibly the most challenging. He recounted that Kilimanjaro, being the tallest mountain he had tackled at that point, presented an unknown and demanding challenge. Although the physical demands of the climb don’t diminish with repetition, John pointed out that the familiarity gained from previous ascents instils a sense of confidence and eases the mental aspects of the journey. Nevertheless, he underscored that the altitude, cold, and strenuous uphill hiking characterising Kilimanjaro make it an enduring and formidable challenge that should never be underestimated.

John expressed his profound appreciation for the opportunity to stand atop Kilimanjaro alongside numerous fellow mountaineers throughout the years. He described the privilege of sharing in the joy of their dreams and ambitions being realised, which adds a special dimension to the experience. John also spoke warmly of Tanzania and its people, highlighting their unique charm and hospitality.

John Black encouraged all Africans to embrace the challenge of witnessing the sunrise over Africa from Uhuru, Kilimanjaro’s highest point, describing it as a truly magical experience.
