Modderfontein Bridge Project Advancing, Thanks to JDA
The Johannesburg Development Agency has completed the rehabilitation and modernisation of the southern section of the Modderfontein Bridge, marking a significant milestone in this infrastructure project.
The Modderfontein Bridge project, situated east of Johannesburg, was overseen by the JDA, the infrastructure arm of the City of Johannesburg and appointed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). This initiative aimed to address critical structural issues and enhance the bridge’s safety and functionality, particularly by increasing its cell capacity to accommodate the river flowing beneath it.
Completing the upstream gabion works on the south bridge’s single cell has alleviated past congestion issues during the project’s earlier stages. It also tackled problems arising from river overflow incidents that previously damaged the bridge’s infrastructure. Modderfontein Road, home to the bridge, is a vital connection between the Johannesburg and Ekuhuruleni metros.
The local community, businesses, and commuters have welcomed reopening the southern section of the bridge. It enhances travel and connectivity in the area.

Although this southern section of the bridge is operational, additional work remains, including completing gabions between the bridges and downstream of the river. Meanwhile, the northern section of the bridge has been closed to commence the north bridge works.
The JDA faced challenges with the project’s current contractor, leading to the termination of their contract. The agency will oversee the termination process and subsequently work with the JRA to source a new contractor to complete the project.
Siyabonga Genu, the JDA’s executive manager of project implementation, acknowledged the project’s past challenges and expressed apologies for any inconvenience experienced by the affected communities. The JDA will assess the site and traffic flow to minimise disruptions and ensure public safety during the project’s transition to a new contractor.
The project encompasses a range of civil works, from excavation and bridge construction to stormwater management, erosion protection, roadworks, and more. Safety measures for pedestrians and motorists will remain a top priority throughout the project’s continuation and completion, with traffic and pedestrian management plans in place to safeguard the public. The JRA will provide further project updates and communication once a new contractor is appointed.
