Updated: Johannesburg Fire Tragedy Claims 77 Lives

The Johannesburg fire death toll has risen to 77, with three more individuals succumbing to their injuries while in the hospital.

Tragically, 74 died in the Osindiso building in Johannesburg CBD on Thursday morning, as reported by Power987. Out of the 88 initially hospitalised, only 31 are currently undergoing treatment.

Authorities are in the process of conducting post-mortems on the 74 victims. The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) reports significant progress, with pathologists having completed post-mortems on 58 bodies by Saturday evening, leaving only 16 to be concluded on Sunday.

The GDoH is urging families with missing members who resided in the Osindiso building to visit the Diepkloof FPS for assistance in identifying unrecognisable bodies, which may not be identifiable through DNA testing.

There are 62 unidentifiable bodies at the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Services mortuary and 12 indefinable corpses. So far, 40 families have come forward to report their loved ones, resulting in 66 names of individuals who may have perished in the fire.

Nine families have successfully identified their loved ones among the 12 identifiable bodies. Once these families complete the necessary processes and provide the required identification documents, the mortal remains will be released to them for burial.
