Tragedy struck when a Soweto boy drowned at a Johannesburg water site on Sunday. This devastating incident has prompted an immediate investigation by relevant authorities to determine the circumstances that led to Tshepo Moloi’s untimely death.

SowetanLIVE reports that Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed the incident, revealing a pool of groundwater at the shaft where the drowning occurred. In response to the tragedy, a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for environment and infrastructure services (EISD), Jack Sekwaila, along with a team from Joburg Water, visited the site as well as the family home of the young victim on Monday.

Shabalala further shared that the Moroka police station opened a case, and the Department of Employment and Labour has been informed, initiating an independent investigation.

Amid the ongoing investigations, an internal inquiry by Johannesburg Water is also underway to comprehensively understand the sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking incident. The entity is committed to cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.
