Gauteng MEC Maile: Government’s Dedication to Informal Settlement Eradication Remains Firm
Gauteng’s MEC for Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating informal settlements, addressing the issue during his visit to the Itireleng informal settlement near Laudium, Tshwane, where a tragic incident claimed the lives of five children.
According to EWN, the incident involved the alleged negligence of mothers who left their children unattended while they visited a local tavern, resulting in the devastating loss of young lives.
Maile highlighted the pressing challenge of informal settlements across the province, revealing that there are currently more than 700 such settlements, with a significant portion needing proper authorisation.

He further pointed out the concerning trend of informal settlement growth in major metropolitan areas like Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni since 2016.
Addressing the situation directly, Maile emphasised that the City of Tshwane, in particular, had allocated over a billion rand to address the issue of informal settlements. He stressed that the city is responsible for providing essential temporary services to these settlements, highlighting the necessity of accommodating and serving these communities, even if they have emerged informally.
Maile’s remarks reflect the ongoing efforts of the government to address the challenges posed by informal settlements and to provide necessary services to these communities, even as they work toward long-term eradication solutions.
