The summit, themed “BRICS and Africa,” will convene the leaders of Brazil, China, India, South Africa, and Russia’s top diplomat from August 22 to 24.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attendance raised questions due to his International Criminal Court status regarding the Ukraine conflict. However, his participation has been confirmed, demonstrating South Africa’s stance.

A pivotal topic is the potential expansion of BRICS membership. African nations like Algeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia are eager to join the bloc, revealing BRICS’s growing global influence.

With 69 countries invited, including all African states, the summit holds significant potential for shaping future economic collaborations.

BRICS seeks to counterbalance Western economic dominance. They account for 23 per cent of the world’s GDP and represent 42 per cent of the global population.
