146 arrests in Alberton

The Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, commended the collective efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies following a successful operation resulting in 146 arrests in Alberton for various offences.

Dubbed “Operation Shanela,” officers initiated the suspects tracing operation on the evening of August 16. They concluded the following morning—the process aimed to target individuals involved in criminal activities in the area.

Major General Anna Sithole oversaw the operation’s execution, which extended to the Brackendowns policing precincts on Thursday morning.

During the operation, law enforcement authorities apprehended 21 undocumented individuals, closed down two illegal liquor establishments, and seized 24 litres. Furthermore, officers issued 75 traffic fines amounting to R26,900 to motorists and arrested two suspects for alleged involvement in the illegal trade of dagga (marijuana).

To engage with the community, a public imbizo was held in Thinasonke, Brackendowns. This gathering featured the Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, Ambassador of Police Nhlanhla Sizani, the acting station commander of Brackendowns SAPS, and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, Geoff Steyn—the imbizo aimed to discuss crime-related concerns and allow community members to voice their worries.

Commending the collaborative effort, Major General Sithole expressed gratitude for the dedication of law enforcement personnel. She highlighted the significant impact of their presence on deterring severe crimes. No major incidents were reported at the Brackendowns SAPS during the operation, indicating that the increased police presence had effectively dissuaded criminal activity in the area.
