Gauteng Sets January 2024 Deadline to End Load Shedding

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced a proactive approach to resolve the energy crisis that has plagued the province. Speaking on Saturday during the African National Congress (ANC)’s national working committee meeting at the Turffontein Racecourse, Lesufi revealed the provincial government’s determination to alleviate the burden of rotational power outages by January 2024 as reported by Eyewitness News.

Addressing the critical load-shedding issue, Lesufi emphasised that the provincial government has formulated a comprehensive plan to secure alternative energy sources while rehabilitating and enhancing the existing electrical infrastructure. This strategy includes establishing three dedicated power plants within Gauteng, all fueled by solar energy. The initiative aims to augment energy capacity and extend access to electricity, particularly to those currently without it.

Lesufi further articulated the province’s commitment to revitalising dormant electricity plants, a crucial step towards boosting the region’s energy generation capability. The government seeks to bolster the overall energy supply network by breathing new life into these previously inactive facilities.

The Premier’s announcement reflects a multifaceted strategy combining renewable energy investments, infrastructure rehabilitation, and accessible energy distribution. The projected timeline for assessing the effectiveness of these initiatives aligns with Lesufi’s assertion that the province could be relieved from the adverse impacts of load shedding by January.

This deliberate and systematic approach underscores Gauteng’s dedication to navigating the energy crisis and fortifying its economic vitality.
