Mugging Incident: Women Targeted in South Hills
Women are being mugged in South Hills, raising concerns among residents about their safety. The Southern Courier spoke to several women who have been victims of these muggings, and they expressed frustration over the lack of police visibility in the area, particularly during the morning hours when they are heading to work.
Residents are pointing to a recent crime stop march attended by Moffat View SAPS, during which the police assured the community that they would increase patrols in the area. However, these promises have not translated into action, leaving residents vulnerable and unprotected.
The muggings reportedly involve vehicles without license plates, with victims mentioning a white Toyota Yaris and a white BMW. Specific streets, such as Outspan and Bethlehem roads, Geneva Road and Shannon Road near the car wash, have been identified as hotspots for these incidents.

A victim shared her experience: “At 05:00, a white Toyota Yaris with no number plates pulled over next to us. Three men got out, one of them armed with a gun. They took our phones. This happened on Outspan Road.” Other women have shared similar accounts of their encounters with these criminals.
When questioned about whether they reported the incidents to the police, the victims expressed scepticism about the effectiveness of such actions. One woman commented, “No, as nothing will happen, as always.”
The Southern Courier contacted police spokesmen Captain Jeff Phora and Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo for a response to these concerns. As of now, there has been no official response from the authorities.
