Sinkholes in Robindale Spark Concern Amidst Infrastructure Woes
Sinkholes in Robindale are sparking concerns among residents and local officials. Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk has raised the alarm, calling for prompt repairs to prevent potential risks to residents and motorists.
The emergence of these sinkholes is linked to broken stormwater pipes, a recurring issue in the city, causing gradual ground collapse over an extended period. This phenomenon has been observed in various areas, as ageing pipes experience bursts and delayed repairs.
Robindale’s sinkhole sites are situated at critical points: one at the junction of Gondola Avenue and Abbott Road and the other at Maid Marion and Kent Avenues, intersecting with George Street.
Van Dyk highlighted the urgency of addressing the sinkholes, particularly the one at the busy Maid Marion intersection, highlighting the potential risks posed to drivers. She expressed her frustrations and urged the city’s officials to prioritise service delivery and residents’ safety.

Resident Gavin Mack drew attention to the sinkhole at Maid Marion, revealing its damaging effects on the pavement and boundary wall. Despite contacting the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) on June 8, he received minimal response. His experience underscores the bureaucratic challenges in addressing such issues promptly.
Bertha Peters-Scheepers, a spokesperson for the JRA, acknowledged the issues and confirmed that both locations demand immediate attention, involving collaborative efforts between the JRA and Johannesburg Water. A comprehensive plan is underway to address the problems and reinstate the affected road. The JRA will provide updates by the end of the week.
Nolwazi Dhlami, a spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, clarified their stance on the matter, indicating that stormwater-related concerns fall within the purview of the JRA. As the sinkholes continue to raise the alarm in Robindale, community members hope for swift and effective interventions to ensure their safety and the integrity of their neighbourhood’s infrastructure.
