EMPD has responded to the bribery allegations

The EMPD has responded to the bribery allegations by launching a comprehensive investigation into alleged misconduct at the Ekurhuleni Traffic Licence Department in Springs.

Driving school operators in Springs have expressed frustration with what they claim to be increasing demands for bribes by examiners who the metro employs.

In response to these allegations, Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, spokesperson for the EMPD, stated that the department is actively addressing the issue through various measures. She explained that regular engagements and meetings are held with examiners to discourage such practices and remind them of their duties under the National Road Traffic Act 93(96).

The EMPD has taken specific actions at the station level to counteract this issue:

  • Managers and senior examiners observe learner licence classes and practical tests.
  • Misconduct is reported to the monitoring and evaluation unit for possible legal action.
  • Stakeholder meetings with driving schools address challenges and resolve issues.

Lieutenant Colonel Thepa emphasised that these engagement forums had not raised or reported such issues.

The EMPD has established several channels for the public to report such behaviour:

  • Managers and representatives are available for direct contact.
  • Stakeholder meetings provide a platform for dialogue.
  • The city’s hotline and public electronic complaints platform are available to report illegal activities.
  • Council vehicles are branded with visible stickers displaying contact information for reporting fraudulent activities.

The public must report such incidents to the city’s hotline or the police, providing detailed descriptions of alleged offenders to ensure appropriate action is taken.
